IELTS Writing Task 2 question
People should never eat meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Human beings are more concerned about their eating habits nowadays. Some people think that people should never eat meat because it is cruel to raise animals for own consumption. I disagree with this opinion and reasons behind this disagreement will be discussed further.
The most important reason is that human beings evolved from so many years and their eating habits depend upon their geographical area and available food options in those times. Thus, if people are comfortable with eating meat today, then they got this habit from their ancesters who did not have other options to survive. For instance, people living near costal areas are used to eat sea food and countries with heavy snowfalls where growing crops is impossible have animals as their cold meat consumption for survival in cold weather. Moreover, when countries does not have vegeterian options, then it becomes more costly for them to import vegetables from other countries. Eventually, common people who cannot afford costly goods prefer to consume the local food they have which could be animals whom they are raising for meat consumption.
On the other side of the opinion is relevant at some extent. People who already have other options in their local food should avoid eating meat just for their fun and taste. For instance, India has rich soil which helps to grow crops. Thus, people could have cheaper vegeterian options there and they should never eat meat or chicken for their taste.
In conclusion, it is not appropriate that humans could avoid meat entirely. However, people who could afford other options and those options are affordable, then individuals may avoid the consumption of meat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you disagree that everyone should stop eating meat, while accepting that people with affordable alternatives could avoid it. You support your main view with relevant points about geography, food availability, and survival, and the coastal and snowy-region examples help illustrate these. However, the discussion of historical eating habits is somewhat general, and the claim that people in India “should never eat meat” is stronger than the reasoning provided; it also shifts from whether meat is cruel to whether alternatives are available. Develop the ethical issue more directly—for example, distinguish between intensive farming and more humane animal-rearing practices—and explain how this supports your position. This would make the response more fully balanced and its ideas clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your position, the first body paragraph gives reasons for it, the next considers an opposing view, and the conclusion restates your stance. Linking expressions such as “Thus,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. “On the other side of the opinion is relevant at some extent” does not clearly introduce the counterargument, and “those options” in the conclusion could be more precisely linked to affordable alternatives. The first body paragraph also combines several points in a long sequence. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph develop one main idea, with transitions that show the relationship between claims rather than simply marking sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “geographical area,” “survive,” “import,” and “consumption,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “heavy snowfalls” and “rich soil.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “cold meat consumption,” “vegeterian options,” and “for their fun and taste.” Spelling errors such as “ancesters” and “costal” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a bank of accurate phrases for food access and animal welfare, and check spelling and word forms carefully when proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if people are comfortable with eating meat today”) and relative clauses (“countries with heavy snowfalls where growing crops is impossible”). This gives the response some variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement and verb forms: “when countries does not have” should use a plural verb, while “people living near costal areas are used to eat” needs a different verb pattern. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “human beings evolved from so many years” and “On the other side of the opinion is relevant.” Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive and gerund patterns, and clause formation. More accurate control of these structures would make your reasoning easier to follow.
