IELTS Writing Task 2 question
People should never eat meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Raising animals for human consumption has always been a controversial topic of discussion in today's world. As more people are becoming aware about animal rights and switching to a vegan lifestyle it is a bit complex to make them understand the nutritional aspect behind this.
However being in healthcare I have seen the benefits of consuming organic and home bred animals. People who do not consume animal protein often end up with progressive aging and are more prone to infections.
Similarly knowing what is being fed to your animal before eating also adds to the ease of your mind. Majority people opt to buy from local farms because they know that these animals have been raised in a toxin free environment.
Also animal reproductive life cycle is very fast and if they are not consumed by humans that could also pose as a threat to the ecosystem. As this will increase wild predators.
Eating animal meat also provides double the amount of energy than eating a plant based diet. This is also more convenient for people who embark on a health journey where they want to gain muscle mass faster. Plant or alternative protein sources sometimes have an acquired taste that does appeal to majority of people.
In conclusion I would like to say that our lives would be much easier if we follow what our ancestors did. Eating more animal protein, walking more and taking adequate sunlight will all add to a more healthy lifestyle and make us better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you disagree with the claim that people should never eat meat, and you give several relevant reasons, including nutrition, local farming, convenience, and possible ecological effects. The healthcare perspective also gives your argument a personal basis. However, some points are asserted rather than explained or supported. For example, the claim that people who avoid animal protein experience “progressive aging” and more infections needs evidence or qualification, while the predator argument is difficult to follow. The response also gives limited attention to the central issue of animal cruelty; explaining how higher-welfare farming might address this concern would make your answer more complete. Develop fewer arguments with clearer examples and acknowledge the opposing view before responding to it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an identifiable overall structure: an introduction, a series of supporting points, and a conclusion that restates your preference for eating animal protein. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “Also,” and “In conclusion” help signal movement between ideas. However, the body reads more like a list than a connected argument, and the links between some claims are unclear. In particular, the move from animals’ reproductive cycles to increased wild predators needs explanation. The paragraphing also does not clearly group related reasons, and “However” in the introduction does not establish a clear contrast. Organise the body into focused paragraphs—for example, one on nutrition and one on farming and animal welfare—and use references and transitions that show how each point supports your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “animal rights,” “vegan lifestyle,” “animal protein,” “ecosystem,” and “muscle mass.” These terms make your subject clear, and phrases such as “local farms” and “toxin free environment” show an attempt to be specific. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “ease of your mind” is not the usual expression, and “an acquired taste that does appeal” appears to express the opposite of your intended meaning. “Progressive aging” is also unclear in this context. Aim for precise, conventional phrasing and avoid broad claims when a more exact term is available. This would make your argument sound more controlled while preserving your relevant topic vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if they are not consumed by humans” and a relative clause in “where they want to gain muscle mass faster.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation issues reduce accuracy. For example, “As more people are becoming aware about…” is an incomplete dependent clause, and “Majority people opt…” is missing a determiner. The sentence beginning “As this will increase wild predators” is also a fragment, while “Eating animal meat also provides double the amount of energy than…” has an awkward comparison structure. Review clause completeness, articles, and comparative forms, and connect dependent clauses to a main clause. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
