Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that while few individuals think that sports classes play an essential role in schools while others claim that it is best to spend more time on general subjects. Although both views have valid arguments, I firmly believe that incorporating sports coaching in schools have greater long-term benefits.

On the one hand, children who are taking physical education have more chances to develop their overall intellectual since childhood and also are more healthy and fit. This also helps in their cognitive development. In addition to this, children from their young age get to know their interests and can wisely choose their hobby or career for their brighter future. For example, a very famous national level badminton player PV Sindhu was able to identify her interests when she was playing this sport since early age and was then able to focus on this particular sport and master it.

On the other hand, there are some parents who believe that all other extra-curricular activities are waste of time and children should only focus on core subjects which will help in development of their career. However, I agree with this point to some extent if their children aim is clear and if they want to go in competitive field like doctor, engineering or lawyer they would have to spend most of their time on studies and less on any other activities. The very popular British research studies shows that people who focus more on their academics during school time are likely to be selected in best institutes of their own field.

Overall, both opinions are valid, but I believe that children should get a chance to decide their career and therefore should be exposed with sports teaching in their early life periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cognitive benefits of sports and the academic focus required for competitive careers. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding academic focus could be more deeply explored beyond just mentioning 'best institutes'. The example of PV Sindhu is relevant, but the overall depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition to this', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is mostly accurate, though there are minor issues with sentence-level flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical structure is sufficient to follow the writer's train of thought without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'incorporating', 'cognitive development', and 'competitive field'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'exposed with sports teaching' (should be 'exposed to') and 'overall intellectual' (should be 'intellectual capacity'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('sports coaching... have' should be 'has') and awkward phrasing ('children who are taking physical education have more chances to develop their overall intellectual'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but some sentences are slightly clunky. While the writer attempts complex structures, the control over them is inconsistent. The errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
