Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the salad days of millennium, society is polarized into two groups almost equally regarding the notion whether school should focus on academics or physical education, is important part of a child's education. In my view, it is important to critically analyze both sides of the arguments before forming a well-rounded opinion.
On the one hand, there are multitude of reasons why individuals thinks that extra co-curricular activities such as sports, gym , and swimming plays crucial role in cognitive development of children. For instance, hiking is a great activity which could be done individually and in groups, helps to build team spirit , communication , and mental clarity. Moreover, practical experience have different impact on individuals rather than focusing only on academic knowledge, which further strengthens the case for physical education. To cite an example, many schools in Finland teach life skills like financial management and cooking , helping students manage daily responsibilities.
Conversely, opponents might raise valid concerns, such as distraction for students who are pursuing their career in biology or math. This viewpoint highlights the potential risks associated with their performance and marks in final exams. However, I firmly believe that it is important to take break from the workload of assignments to perform well in exams.
In compendium, both opinions have valid arguments on both sides. While supporters emphasize the benefits, opponents raise important consideration. After examining, the arguments for and against physical education , it is crucial to weigh the evidence carefully before forming a definitive opinion. Ultimately, a balanced approach that considers various perspectives is essential in navigating complex issues such as education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides an opinion. However, the position is not clearly stated in the introduction; you mention the need to analyze both sides but do not explicitly state your stance until the final paragraph. The development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the mention of Finland is interesting but not clearly linked to the core debate of physical education versus academics. To reach a higher band, ensure your opinion is clear from the start and provide more detailed, logical support for your arguments rather than just listing activities or general benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Conversely', and 'In compendium' (though 'In conclusion' would be more standard). However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For instance, the link between the paragraph about physical education and the example of life skills in Finland is not explicitly explained, which disrupts the flow of your argument. Improving the logical connection between sentences will help improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'salad days of millennium' and 'well-rounded opinion'. However, there are issues with collocation and word choice. 'Salad days' is used incorrectly here, and 'In compendium' is not a standard way to conclude an essay. Additionally, there are minor errors in phrasing, such as 'multitude of reasons why individuals thinks' (subject-verb agreement). To improve, focus on using vocabulary more naturally and ensuring that your word choices are appropriate for the formal context of an IELTS essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('individuals thinks', 'experience have'), missing articles ('take break'), and awkward phrasing ('regarding the notion whether school should focus... is important part'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical rules, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, to enhance the accuracy of your writing.
