Student answer (Band 7.5)

In recent years, the role of physical education and academic studies in children's education has become a subject of considerable debate. While some people believe that schools should focus mainly on academic subjects, I strongly disagree with the view that physical education should be given less importance, as it plays an essential role in children's physical and mental development. This essay will explain the main reasons for my position.

The primary reason why I disagree with this view is that physical education is essential for maintaining children's physical health. This is because regular exercise helps children develop stronger muscles and bones, maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of lifestyle-related health problems. For example, students who participate in activities such as football, swimming or athletics several times a week are more likely to remain physically active and develop healthy habits from an early age. As a result, they can enjoy better physical health and are less likely to develop problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, it is evident that physical education should remain an important component of school education rather than being sacrificed for academic subjects.

Another significant reason is that physical activity can improve children's mental well-being and academic performance. In other words, exercise can reduce stress, improve concentration and help students return to their academic work with greater focus. A good example of this can be seen in schools that schedule regular sports sessions or short physical activities during the school week, where students often have an opportunity to relax and refresh their minds after spending considerable time studying. Consequently, they may become more attentive in the classroom and develop important qualities such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance. This further demonstrates why physical education and academic learning should complement each other rather than being treated as competing priorities.

In conclusion, although giving greater emphasis to academic subjects may have some merit, I believe that physical education should remain an important part of children's education because it promotes physical health and supports mental well-being and academic performance. Therefore, schools should maintain a balanced curriculum that gives appropriate importance to both academic achievement and physical development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly present your position in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. Both sides of the argument are discussed, with the benefits of physical education being well-supported by logical reasoning and relevant examples, such as the mention of specific sports like swimming and athletics. The ideas are well-developed, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your argument. You have successfully balanced the requirement to discuss both views while providing a clear personal opinion, meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason,' 'Another significant reason,' and 'In conclusion.' Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words like 'consequently' and 'therefore' helps to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each section serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure of the response. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'sedentary lifestyle,' 'competing priorities,' and 'balanced curriculum' show an ability to use less common lexical items effectively. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the language used is appropriate for an academic essay. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical range is strong and supports the clear communication of your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures with high levels of accuracy. You successfully use complex sentences, such as 'While some people believe that schools should focus mainly on academic subjects, I strongly disagree...' and '...where students often have an opportunity to relax and refresh their minds after spending considerable time studying.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over grammar is consistent, and there are no significant errors that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
