Some people say that physical education classes are an important part of a child's education. Others believe that it is more important to focus on academics during school time.
Discuss both these views, and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In my opinion both physical education and academics should be given equal importance. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Firstly, academics play an important role in their lives. It helps students to upgrade all their skills. It helps them to be confident and improve their knowledge. At the same time physical education plays an role in keeping their body fit and healthy. If they are fit and healthy they will be able to concentrate inthe class and give their best.
Moreover both should be given importance. More time can be spend on academics than sports however sports cannot be neglected as it assist students in different ways.focusing only on academics will create a demotivation on students without any physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You give a relevant opinion—that physical education and academics should have equal importance—and mention a benefit of each: academics can build knowledge and confidence, while exercise supports health and concentration. However, the response only minimally discusses the two views. The academic-focused position is not explained in depth, and the case for physical education is supported by only a brief general point rather than a developed reason or example. Your final paragraph also says academics may receive more time, which makes your position less clear than the opening claim of equal importance. The response does not meet the required minimum length, so there is not enough development to address all parts of the task fully. Add explanations and specific examples for both views, then state and maintain a clear opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an opening opinion, a paragraph beginning “Firstly,” and a final paragraph introduced by “Moreover.” This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and the ideas are generally related to the topic. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph repeats that both areas matter rather than developing a distinct point, and the two sides of the discussion are not clearly separated or balanced. Linking words such as “Moreover” do not always show the precise relationship between ideas. Some sentences also run together, for example “It helps students to upgrade all their skills. It helps them to be confident and improve their knowledge. At the same time…” Use separate paragraphs for each view and a conclusion, and connect each reason to its explanation or example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “physical education,” “academics,” “fit and healthy,” and “concentrate.” The meaning is generally understandable, but the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. For example, “upgrade all their skills” is not a natural way to describe academic learning, while “create a demotivation on students” is awkward and may slow the reader’s understanding. “Sports” is also used broadly where “physical activity” or “physical education” would be more precise. To improve, build a wider set of accurate terms for learning outcomes, wellbeing, and school priorities, and check common word partnerships. This would help you express the same relevant ideas more clearly and with less repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and a conditional structure, as in “If they are fit and healthy they will be able to concentrate in the class.” This shows some ability to connect ideas, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include “physical education plays an role,” where the article is incorrect, and “More time can be spend,” where the verb form should be “spent.” There are also missing spaces after full stops and commas, such as “lives. It” and “knowledge. At,” which weaken punctuation control. Practise accurate articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, then add a wider range of correctly formed complex sentences.
