Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, children are required to study different languages at their various schools because it help in development of the brain and build versatility in different languages. Some schools do not include foreign languages in their curriculum because learning such languages can be exhausting and mentally draining. The purpose of this essay is to explore the benefits of foreign language study and also answer the question if language is a crucial part of education.

Studying foreign languages can offer several benefits to children. First and foremost it helps stimulates their intellectual capacity. When a child is exposed to different languages from tender age, they tend to become smarter because it takes a lot of brain activity to be able to understand and speak a foreign language. Secondly, it also build their versatility in different languages. Such children who learnt foreign languages in school can study or work abroad without having to worry about language barrier.

Although some people believe that foreign language should not taught in primary or secondary schools because of the mental stress and exhaustion involved in learning a new language. I personally think that foreign language course is an important part of education because it helps to prepare the children for a better career in the future. Kids who learnt different languages can grow up and decide to take up a career in linguistics. They can also get job opportunities at different embassies.

In conclusion, the benefits of learning diverse languages in school outweigh the risks. It help to raise smarter children in the society. It also make kids more versatile in different languages. Foreign language should form an integral part of the educational system because It prepares the children for their future careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you identify benefits, including intellectual development and greater ability to study or work abroad, and clearly state that foreign-language study is important. The examples of future work in linguistics or at embassies help make your position relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For instance, the claim that language learning makes children “smarter” would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how it develops thinking skills, while the career benefits are mentioned briefly without a specific example. The opposing view—that learning can be mentally exhausting—is acknowledged, but not explored or answered in much detail. Develop these ideas with explanation or examples so that each part of the response is addressed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph presenting a counterargument and your view, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First and foremost,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the requirement for coherent organisation, and some links between ideas are clear. However, the linking can feel mechanical, and a few connections are not fully smooth. The sentence beginning “Although some people believe…” is left as a dependent clause before the next sentence, which interrupts the flow. The conclusion also repeats the benefits and position rather than drawing the discussion together. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between contrasting points explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “intellectual capacity,” “curriculum,” “language barrier,” “linguistics,” and “integral part.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or repetitive: “build versatility in different languages” is not a natural way to express the idea, and “smarter” is imprecise in an academic discussion. “Tender age” and “mentally draining” also sound less suitable or less precise in context. Aim for more natural combinations and vary repeated terms such as “different languages.” These refinements would make your vocabulary more precise while preserving the clear meaning of your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “When a child is exposed…” and a relative clause in “children who learnt foreign languages.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “it help” and “it also build,” the missing passive form in “should not taught,” and the incomplete “Although…” clause at the start of the third paragraph. There are also article and number issues, as in “from tender age” and “foreign language course.” Capitalisation is inconsistent in “because It prepares.” Check agreement and verb forms carefully, and ensure that subordinate clauses are joined to a complete main clause. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
