IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study?

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some educational systems are now requiring the children to study foreign language, maybe because there is a big impact and benefits after they finish their school.

For me studying a foreign language is more crucial in every students because,if we know various languages,we can use it after we graduated.

For instance if my course is tourism I can definitly use foreign languages during

my flight.I can easily communicate with the passenger,if they need or want something i can understand it right away.As for me because i am not that fluent in English its hard to communicate to my boss.Sometimes i cant answer them because i don`t know how and what to answer to my boss.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give a clear opinion that foreign-language study is important, and the tourism example is relevant: you explain how language skills could help you communicate with passengers. However, the response addresses the task only partially. The benefits are illustrated mainly through one work-related situation, while other potential benefits are not explored, and the second question is answered only briefly. The personal example about difficulty communicating with your boss is relevant but needs clearer explanation of how it supports your view. The response is also below the required 250 words, so there is not enough development to cover both questions fully. Add further benefits and explain each with a specific example or consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: you introduce the topic, state your opinion, and then give a tourism example followed by a personal experience. Phrases such as “For instance” and “As for me” help signal these moves. However, the overall progression is limited, and the ideas are crowded into one paragraph rather than separated into a clear introduction and developed body paragraphs. Some links are awkward or unclear, particularly the shift from communicating with passengers to communicating with your boss. Organise the response into paragraphs, with each paragraph focused on one benefit or example, and use linking phrases to explain how each example supports your opinion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main point, including “foreign language,” “communicate,” and “passenger,” and the tourism example gives some topic-specific language. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “a big impact and benefits,” “more crucial in every students,” and “during my flight.” These expressions make parts of the response less natural and may slow the reader. Aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary for discussing education and practical advantages. For example, you could describe language learning as “valuable for career prospects” and explain that it helps people “communicate with international customers.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional idea beginning “if we know various languages” and an example introduced by “For instance.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors are frequent and some longer sentences are difficult to follow. Examples include “every students,” “after we graduated,” and the run-on construction “I can easily communicate with the passenger, if they need or want something i can understand it right away.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, and the apostrophe in “cant” is missing. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms, and divide long sentences into shorter units with clear punctuation.
