Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, it is crucial to study foreign language in some educational systems, whereas in other frameworks it is not a requirement. Learning foreign languages have a significant number of benefits such as, increased job prospects, helps in travelling. In my opinion, teaching foreign language should be an important factor of education system.

To begin with, learning other language helps a person to communicate with a larger group of people. This also increase confidence of an individual. Moreover, international languages may help to get better and higher paying jobs. For example, if someone knows another language it makes them more employable because many multinational companies and call centers need individuals who can communicate in different languages to resolve problems of a wide range of client base. Consequently, many people are learning foreign languages to increase their chances of getting hired.

In addition, learning a different language is a very important part of education. Firstly, this improves the cognitive skills of children such as, improved attention span and processing speed. As per a study, children who learn non- native languages can concentrate, learn, and recognize things better and faster than their counterparts. Secondly, children observe and learn fast than younger people, which makes it easier for them to learn and master a new language at an early age that will helps them later in life.

To conclude, learning foreign language is beneficial for overall growth of students. Foreign language helps them to communicate with other nationalities and helps them to grow professionally. Thus, it should be compulsory subject in every educational system.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying benefits of foreign language study and clearly stating a position that it should be a compulsory part of education. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of multinational companies and cognitive benefits. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the benefits of communication are mentioned in both the introduction and the conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-developed point rather than restating previous ideas. Overall, the response is clear and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the link between the cognitive benefits and the conclusion could be more tightly integrated. Overall, the text is easy to follow and demonstrates a clear sense of structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'multinational companies', 'cognitive skills', and 'employable'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'teaching foreign language should be an important factor of education system' (should be 'part of the education system'). To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider lexical range and more precise control over word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Learning foreign languages have', 'this increase confidence', 'children observe and learn fast than younger people'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors ('study foreign language' should be 'study a foreign language'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the accuracy of complex structures and proofreading for basic agreement errors would significantly improve the score.
