Student answer (Band 6.5)

i do think foreign language study is important and must be a requirement in a current scenario. The world have now became a global village thanks to globalization and modernization. In such context the importance of foreign language have played a vital role in terms of communication and maintain a global trade . Being bilingual have now become a additional skills one must acquire in order to stay in the competitive market. Adding a foreign language study in a curriculum can help to ensure younger people to learn a new language and help them be confident to step out into the real world.

Let me take my own example. To start I am from nepal and nepali is my first language. But I have been studying english ever since my school days. English have been part of our curriculum which make it my second language. I was able to read, write and speak english from my earliest days. This have ultimately helped me when i came to Canada. I was able to easily adapt and adjust myself to my new home . Being bilingual have made me confident to meet new people, socialize with new people and explore the global market in an easy way. Beside english , i had an opportunity to learn mandarin on my college as a part of additional vocational activity which have added one more skill which have given me edge over others.

Moreover, foreign language study is crucial for any individual who wants to explore to world market and wants to expand their horizon whether that be on further study or on their career.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it identifies benefits of foreign language study (communication, global trade, personal confidence, career edge) and clearly states a position that it should be a requirement. The ideas are relevant and supported by a personal example from your experience in Nepal and Canada. However, the development is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'benefits' section with more depth, perhaps discussing cognitive or cultural advantages beyond just career and trade. The conclusion is also quite brief and could better summarize the main points to reinforce your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, a body paragraph containing personal examples, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'To start', and 'In such context' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the general benefits to your personal experience is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'foreign language study' and 'have/has' structures. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'globalization', 'modernization', 'bilingual', and 'vocational activity'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'maintain a global trade' is slightly unnatural (better: 'facilitate global trade'), and 'on my college' should be 'at my college'. There is also some repetition of basic verbs like 'have' and 'help'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The world have now became', 'importance... have played', 'English have been'). These errors are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded, the frequency of these basic errors prevents a higher score. You should focus on proofreading for singular/plural agreement and verb tense consistency, as these are foundational elements that currently detract from the quality of your writing.
