IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some countries have a mandatory policy to educate multiple foreign languages to their students, while others do not have this. This development has advantages like developing good understanding of a foreign culture and future opportunities to migrate, and also I believe that learning a foreign language is beneficial as it develops human brain.

It is irrefutable fact that a language reflects native culture and norms, so learning it would potentially build the basic information about that society. This is because a language has evolved through many years and by learning this a child could know more about how it changed in centuries. Another fact that, it helps pupils to migrate in that language speaking countries for education or work. This will help them to build their career, especially when they assimilated in the host culture. For instance, few South-Asian countries have developed a policy for years where they teach their students German, French and other languages, so that their students can build their own career in those nation, if they want.

Learning a foreign language possibly foster the intellect of a growing child because memorizing new vocabs and idioms builds strong memory power. Practicing this would benefit the brain's parts responsible for socialization as it requires multiple time speaking. This skills make a person more confident and radiating, in result pupils could make good personalize characters. For example, it is commonly seen that students who leant different foreign languages develop more positive attitudes and grasping skills in their academic.

In conclusion, some countries are overwhelmingly making foreign languages a mandatory part of their education curriculum, where few refuse to do. This essay maintains that it has huge positive impact on the child's development, and serve other advantages like exploring a new culture and different opportunities.
