Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many educational systems, students are required to learn one or more non-native languages, while in others, it is optional. I believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of education, as it broadens students' horizons, improves communication skills, and creates better career opportunities.
One of the main advantages of learning a foreign language is that it improves career prospects. In today's globalized world, many multinational companies prefer employees who can communicate in more than one language. As a result, bilingual or multilingual individuals often have access to better job opportunities and higher salaries. Furthermore, speaking another language makes travelling much easier, as people can communicate with locals confidently and understand different cultures more effectively. It also opens the door to studying abroad, where students can receive a high-quality education and gain international exposure.
I strongly believe that learning a foreign language should be a compulsory part of every child's education. Firstly, it helps develop important cognitive skills such as memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities. Secondly, it encourages students to appreciate different cultures and traditions, making them more open-minded and respectful towards people from diverse backgrounds. This is particularly important in today's interconnected world. From my own experience, learning English has had a significant impact on my life. It enabled me to pursue higher education in Canada, communicate confidently with people from different countries, and secure better employment opportunities. Without these language skills, achieving these goals would have been much more challenging.
In conclusion, studying a foreign language provides numerous academic, professional, and personal benefits. Therefore, I firmly believe that it should remain an important part of every student's education, as it prepares young people for success in an increasingly global society.

The ideas are well-developed and supported by relevant examples, such as your personal experience with learning English to study in Canada. The response is balanced, covering both the potential benefits and the necessity of language study in an educational context. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'globalized world', 'multilingual individuals', 'cognitive skills', and 'interconnected world' show a level of sophistication. The word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors in collocation or spelling that impede communication. While the vocabulary is effective and fits the context well, incorporating a few more nuanced or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. Overall, the range is sufficient to convey your ideas with clarity and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses and relative clauses (e.g., 'where students can receive a high-quality education'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is strong. There are no major grammatical errors that hinder the reader's understanding. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex forms to express your ideas clearly. The writing is accurate and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar throughout the response.
