In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is mandatory for students to study a foreign language in many curriculums across the globe, whereas some don't consider it as an essential piece of educational policy. It is undebatable that being fluent in more than one language has substantial advantages, however, the policy makers should also be considerate about the grade levels in which language is introduced.

Learning a foreign language has significant merits, which include knowledge expansion, diversified opportunities, and high order thinking skills developed in children. Moreover, acquiring linguistic skills enable students to understand culture perspectives, geographical worldview, and political narratives deeply. For example, pupils who learned a non-native language in schools have more access to career opportunities overseas, as they can communicate easily, form strong professional relationships, and enhance positive partnerships. Additionally, these students have higher order thinking skills in compared to others as their neurons are wired to process information and translate into other language easily.

I vouch for integrating multiple language studies in middle and high schools for the students. It helps in catering interests at an early age, explore career pathways, and cultural inclusivity. For illustration, a prerequisite for international student exchange program between Canada and Japan is to learn English and Japanese. This program helps students learn each others' culture, workforce requirements, career exploration, and strong partnerships among nations, which is only possible after by learning the host country's official language. Hence, an individual can diversify their job market by learning more languages.

To conclude, foreign language study is an important step to encourage and enhance growth of students.
