Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern era, learning foreign language is a hobby for some people. But, in some institutions it a requirement for students to learn one or more foreign language whereas on others its not.

There are many merits of studying a different language in addition to the national language. Firstly, as most of the youngsters are moving abroad for better future. Thus, they need to know the countries language to work, study or communicate with locals. Otherwise, they would often feel it difficult to merge in different environment and people and might face left out while living far away from home. Secondly, knowing a foreign language would gives a lot of job opportunities for students. Even for a basic job like restaurants or gas stations, they must know the local language. Also, they can even get a chance to work for a multinational company. This would also help them to boost their confidence. Hence, if the schools or institutes made it required for a student to learn a foreign language its for the students personal growth only.

In my opinion, as an international student. I completely agreed that foreign language should be an important part of education. For instance, in North America, most of the people know French but as an immigrant I feel out during a conversation as I just know English other than my national language. But, I think if students get a chance to learn different languages they should go for it. It would help them in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of language study and the personal opinion on its importance in education. The ideas regarding job opportunities and cultural integration are relevant. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'boost their confidence' is mentioned but not explained in detail. The conclusion is clear, but the personal example provided is slightly anecdotal and could be better linked to the broader educational context. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully elaborated with more depth and analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Also', and 'Hence' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally weak, such as in the sentence 'in some institutions it a requirement... whereas on others its not'. The flow between sentences is generally logical, but the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to create a more cohesive argument. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and supports the progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. You rely on common phrases like 'better future' and 'personal growth'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'multinational company' and 'immigrant', there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'merge in different environment' (should be 'integrate into') and 'face left out' (should be 'feel left out'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater clarity and nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('knowing a foreign language would gives'), missing articles ('in modern era'), and punctuation errors ('as an international student. I completely agreed'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical precision.
