Student answer (Band 7.5)
In some countries, learning a foreign language is a compulsory part of school education, while in others, students can choose whether to study one. Although learning another language can be challenging, I believe it provides significant academic, social and professional benefits.
One major advantage of foreign language study is that it allows children to communicate with people from different countries. This can be particularly useful when travelling, studying or working abroad. Furthermore, learning a language gives students a better understanding of other cultures, traditions and ways of life. As a result, they may become more open-minded and respectful towards people from different backgrounds. Language learning can also improve memory, concentration and problem-solving skills because students need to remember vocabulary and understand unfamiliar grammatical structures.
In my opinion, foreign language study is an important part of education and should be encouraged in schools. The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and many businesses now operate internationally. Therefore, speaking another language can provide students with better career opportunities in the future. For example, a student who learns French may be able to work more easily with French-speaking clients or study at a university in a French-speaking country.
However, schools should make language lessons practical and enjoyable rather than focusing only on grammar and memorization. Students should have opportunities to practice speaking and listening through conversations, games and real-life situations.
In conclusion, learning a foreign language improves communication skills, cultural awareness and future employment prospects. For these reasons, I believe it is a valuable and important part of a child’s education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You clearly identify the benefits of foreign language study, such as improved communication, cultural awareness, and cognitive development, and you provide a clear position that it is an important part of education. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of French-speaking clients. The response is balanced and maintains a consistent position throughout. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the 'potential benefits' by exploring more nuanced societal or long-term cognitive impacts, but the current development is sufficient for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore,' 'As a result,' and 'Therefore,' which help to link your arguments smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits from your personal opinion and the practical suggestions. The flow is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'increasingly interconnected,' 'employment prospects,' and 'unfamiliar grammatical structures' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the context, it is mostly standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and relative clauses effectively, such as 'a student who learns French may be able to work...' and 'if...'. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. This level of accuracy and variety is indicative of a strong command of English grammar.
