IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some educational systems, it is compulsory to learn one or more foreign languages. Whereas, in others, a foreign language is not mandatory to learn. In my opinion, learning a foreign language is a crucial part of education because by learning a different language students can attain knowledge of distinct cultures and get a chance to socialize with people who belong to other countries.

To begin with, foreigners language learning have several advantages for students like they learn about foreign culture and religion which helps them to be respectful towards others because because students who learn foreign languages also know about moral values of foreign native speakers for example, recently very controversial news come out in which hotel management not allowed to inter sikh community members in hotel because they have turban on their head which is related to their religion and not a part their dress code in fact they solve all issues at end but for while it was become big issue so if students learn about other culture we can expect

The text does not demonstrate the ability to organize ideas into a coherent whole.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'foreigners language learning' instead of 'foreign language learning' and 'inter sikh community' instead of 'enter'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles to express more complex ideas accurately. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of precision and the presence of errors in word formation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include 'foreigners language learning have' (subject-verb agreement), 'not allowed to inter' (incorrect verb usage), and 'it was become' (incorrect tense). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas. The range of structures is limited, and the attempt at complex sentences is often faulty. The high frequency of errors throughout the short text indicates a lack of control over basic grammatical structures.
