Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of foreign language study and the importance of such study in education. The position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as career advancement and educational opportunities, though the development is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about job opportunities and studying abroad is mentioned in both body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the cognitive or cultural benefits of language learning rather than focusing solely on economic and academic mobility. The examples provided, such as the reference to IDP and the University of Toronto, are relevant and support the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Probing ahead', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or unnatural. Additionally, the referencing within sentences is occasionally weak; for example, the phrase 'it bear certain merits' lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent issues with collocation and word choice. The use of 'alien language' and 'alien tongue' is unnatural; 'foreign language' or 'second language' would be more appropriate. Phrases like 'more good paying jobs' are grammatically awkward and lexically imprecise. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, focus on learning more natural collocations and avoiding the repetition of basic terms. Using more precise academic vocabulary would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('it bear certain merits' instead of 'it bears'), missing articles ('learning foreign language' instead of 'learning a foreign language'), and awkward phrasing ('it leads them to prevent themselves from scams'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. Increasing your control over articles, pluralization, and verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy. You should also aim to vary your sentence structures further to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
