Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has become a debatable issue whether students should be required to learn foreign languages or not in many educational institutions. The benefits of learning foreign languages assist in broadening our horizons and building more international connections. I totally believe that instruction of this is an essential factor in constructing cognitive and academic development in overall.

One prime benefit of learning non-native languages in our schooling is to expand our career because this gives us an opportunity to boost our chances of communicating, finalizing the deals with the clients of that nationalities. For example, French learners would prefer to dig more into Businesses in France for their business setup. There has been spike in multi-linguistic approach within individuals to hit the jackpot. Another pro is that it builds more international connections on an individual level as language breaks the monotony and helps connecting hearts together. More languages mean more friends as this incorporates more ties to their cultures, religions, and roots.

The incorporation of foreign languages in our education system is a significant factor in producing the cognitive ability in students as this transcends more students to do aptitude and critical thinking in quizzes without any hesitation. This is owing to the fact that non-nativeness of language builds more pressure to learn new rules, pronunciation, and grammar, which automatically gives them an enigma to think thoroughly and precisely. Not only mental development, this also creates an academic space for scholars who learn foreign language to perform exceptionally better than who do not learn. It boosts their grades for the better.

In conclusion, there is no doubt in saying that learning languages such as French, German, Italian, etc bring positives in professional lives and personal connections. Incorporating this in education is an essential part for pushing ourselves on thinking and performance level.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of foreign language study and the writer's opinion on its importance in education. The ideas are relevant, such as career advancement and cognitive development. However, some points are under-developed or expressed with vague phrasing, such as 'hit the jackpot' or 'gives them an enigma'. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments could benefit from more precise elaboration rather than general statements. The response covers all requirements of the task, but the depth of analysis is somewhat limited, placing it in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific theme. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Not only mental development, this also creates...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and some transitions between sentences feel forced. While the paragraphing is appropriate and the overall structure is coherent, the lack of sophisticated linking words and occasional lapses in flow prevent a higher score. It meets the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are instances of imprecise word choice and informal phrasing. For example, 'dig more into Businesses' and 'hit the jackpot' are not appropriate for an academic essay. There are also some awkward collocations like 'non-nativeness of language' and 'transcends more students'. While the student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, the lack of precision and the reliance on slightly informal or non-standard expressions limit the score. The range is sufficient to communicate ideas clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'instruction of this is an essential factor in constructing cognitive and academic development in overall' and 'perform exceptionally better than who do not learn'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to be noticeable. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control is inconsistent, which is characteristic of a Band 6.0 performance.
