Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of foreign language study and the writer's opinion on its importance. The ideas are relevant, such as career prospects and cultural awareness. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the mention of 'luxuries desires' is vague, and the argument regarding the 'burden on children' in the conclusion is introduced too late to be properly developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the implications of the points raised rather than listing them briefly. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis needs improvement to meet the criteria for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from that', 'To explain this', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To be more precisely'. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the jump from discussing personal traits to reading international news feels slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother to ensure a more natural progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'acquire additional tongues' and 'bilingual', but there are also persistent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'field job', 'luxuries desires', and 'multipal languages'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'non native languages' (should be 'non-native') and 'first world countries'. While the meaning is always clear, the range is somewhat limited, and the errors in word formation and collocation prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the educational system'), subject-verb agreement ('some are believe'), and pluralization ('a new languages'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of misplaced spaces before commas (e.g., 'As a result ,'). Despite these errors, the message is consistently understandable, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring correct usage of articles and verb forms.
