Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries, learning a foreign language is a compulsory part of the school curriculum, whereas some educational systems leave this choice to students. Although studying another language can require considerable time and effort, I believe that it is an important component of education because it provides significant academic, cultural and professional benefits.

One major advantage of learning a foreign language is that it improves communication and broadens people's understanding of other cultures. When students learn another language, they are also introduced to different customs, traditions and ways of thinking. This can make them more open-minded and tolerant towards people from different backgrounds. For example, a student who learns English may be able to communicate with people from numerous countries and gain access to international books, websites and educational resources. Foreign-language skills can therefore help young people become more confident in an increasingly interconnected world.

Another important benefit is that language learning can improve academic and career opportunities. Many universities offer courses and research materials in languages other than a student's native language, while multinational companies often prefer employees who can communicate with international clients and colleagues. In addition, learning a second language can strengthen skills such as memory, concentration and problem-solving because students have to understand and use unfamiliar vocabulary and grammatical structures. These abilities can be useful in other areas of education as well.

In my view, foreign language study should therefore be considered an important part of education. However, schools should focus on practical communication rather than expecting students to memorise large amounts of vocabulary and complicated grammar. For instance, regular speaking activities, discussions and real-life situations could make language learning more useful and engaging.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language can enhance communication, cultural awareness, academic development and future employment prospects. For these reasons, I strongly believe that foreign-language education deserves an important place in school curricula.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt clearly. You have identified the benefits of foreign language study—specifically academic, cultural, and professional advantages—and provided a clear, consistent position that it is an important part of education. The ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples such as the mention of multinational companies and the cognitive benefits of language learning. The structure is logical, and the argument is sustained throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly addressing the counter-argument or the challenges of implementation mentioned in the introduction, ensuring a more balanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'For these reasons', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage, making the text easy to follow and coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'interconnected world', 'professional benefits', and 'academic development' show a solid command of topic-specific language. You use some less common items effectively, such as 'compulsory', 'curriculum', and 'prospects'. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains largely functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to add nuance and flair to your writing, though the current range is sufficient for a high score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although studying another language can require...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your arguments. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. The writing is polished and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence.
