Student answer (Band 5.5)

People have different views about learning foreign language. As a result, few educational institute have made it mandatory for students to study foreign language, while others believe students do not need to learn any other language. I believe learning a second language should be an important part of education, because it helps in creating better employment opportunity and helps to reduce cultural differences.

The primary advantage of learning a second language is better employment opportunity. Selection chances of individuals increases if he/she knows more than one language. As learning foreign language helps in bridging communication gaps between the individual and its potential employer. Moreover, it would help individuals to explore career opportunity globally. For instances, learning French as a second language would increase the possibility of securing a high paying job in countries like Canada and France.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 181 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you address both parts of the prompt—the benefits of language study and your opinion—the second body paragraph is incomplete and cuts off abruptly. The ideas presented, such as employment opportunities and cultural understanding, are relevant but remain underdeveloped due to the lack of length. To improve, you must ensure you provide a full conclusion and expand on your supporting points with more detailed explanations and examples to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay shows a basic logical progression. You use some cohesive devices such as 'The primary advantage', 'Moreover', and 'Secondly' to signal the structure. However, the abrupt ending of the second paragraph and the lack of a concluding paragraph severely disrupt the overall flow and coherence of the response. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete, which makes the essay feel unfinished. To improve, ensure that every paragraph has a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence, and always include a final summary paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'mandatory', 'employment opportunity', and 'cultural differences'. However, there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'educational institute' (should be plural 'institutes') and 'importances of foreign of the culture' (which is grammatically confusing and imprecise). To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'few educational institute have' (subject-verb agreement), 'Selection chances of individuals increases' (should be 'increase'), and 'the individual and its potential employer' (incorrect pronoun usage). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure in the final paragraph is fragmented. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing articles or incorrect pronouns.
