Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is considered paramount to study one or more than one international languages in some educational institutions. On the other hand, several people say it is not significant to have even a single language as a course of study. I strongly believe that in this relatively more globalised world, children should learn at least one foreign language for various purposes. This essay elucidates the significance of learning or skipping the foreign languages.

Firstly, digitalised era has broadened the vision of the society and people are now more connected to eachother in spite of long distances. Furthermore, it depicts that the world has been shrinked gradually due to quick communication. A considereable number of schools design subjects that have more than one foreign languages. They advocate that students should be guided to know about cultures and lifestyles of other countries. For example, if Chinese and English languages are incorporated in basic course outline, in the future, students would be able to get comfortable with native speakers. Eventually, It will enhance their compatibility to get enrolled in international universities and job placements in international markets, as most of the foreign organizations require language proficiency tests.

On the contrary, many institutions do not prefer to introduce language in their academic course. They argue that it is not reasonable to add language as a subject because students are already burdened with major subjects. Moreover, they comment that students have other resources through which they can learn international language and their traditions. For instance, if stduents have heavy workload to learn statistics and they do not have enough time to spend in learning another language, it would cost their health and concentration.

Conclusively, a large number of instututions encourages children to learn more foreign languages to persue their career but on the other hand some schools decline the idea. From my perspective, balance and consistency are crucial attributes. Minimum one international subject should be taught even at primary education level to enhance the exposure of little minds.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing the potential benefits of foreign language study, such as enhanced global connectivity, cultural understanding, and better career and academic prospects, while also acknowledging opposing views regarding student workload. Furthermore, the writer clearly presents their own perspective on whether it is an important part of education. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are generally well extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Chinese and English languages in the curriculum, although some of the arguments regarding the counter-perspective could be slightly more fully developed. Overall, the task response meets the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to the benefits, the opposing view, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'On the contrary', and 'Conclusively' are used to structure the text, though at times referencing and linking can feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used adequately and appropriately. The main area for improvement lies in refining cohesive transitions between sentences to ensure smoother flow, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'paramount', 'globalised', 'compatibility', and 'workload'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the text. For instance, 'international languages' is used when 'foreign languages' is more precise, 'shrinked' is incorrect (should be 'shrunk'), and 'instututions' contains a typo. There are also occasional phrasing awkwardnesses such as 'cost their health'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, corresponding to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures like 'if Chinese and English languages are incorporated... students would be able to'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as missing spaces after punctuation marks (e.g., 'institutions. On', 'purposes. This'), subject-verb agreement slips ('instututions encourages'), and awkward phrasing. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band. Control of grammar and punctuation fits the Band 6.0 descriptor.
