IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate if toddlers should learn at least one foreign language. Some others argue that foreign languages are not important. However, learning a new dialect can be a partly used as a source of income.

Studying a new language can be beneficial in various ways such as making passive income. Working as an interpreter remotely can help to generate income as a part-time job for two individuals from different countries with a language barrier. For instance, a child that knows french and dutch can be a translator for two native speakers of these languages. Consequently, there can be financial reward from having knowledge of different dialects.

From my perspective, having different set of language skills is advantageous to formal learning because it teach kids another multiple cultures. A language is a way of life for many countries, localities and tribes. An individual that studies a different dialect knows a different culture which can help them connect with foreigners during tourism or traveling and this would assist them adapt easily. For example, learning cantonese can help a person understand the chinese culture and this can help them when they travel to china. Ultimately, this is beneficial to the educational system as it helps to bring children learn cultural differences.

In conclusion, foreign languages have it merits in monetary skill because kids can generate income interpreting the languages they learnt. Also, languages should be of utmost value in schools because toddlers need to learn culture of different nations most especially their dialect.
