IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In few schools and colleges, students have to study one extra language or sometimes may be more. While in some educational system it is not required. There are many advantages of knowing other foreign languages. I believe it is very important part of our education and life.

Nowadays, people travel more often around the world for various reasons such as tourism, work or migrating. To give an example of my own, in my school I used to have 3 languages. English, Hindi and French. Because of having French as an extra language it is very easy for me to get a job anywhere in Canada. Many company prefer bilingual employees over someone who only know one language.

Some people use translator applications when speaking to foreign people.This app made life easy for so many people who do not speak the language.

While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary remains basic and repetitive, earning a Band 5.0 for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the concessional clause starting with 'While in some educational system it is not required.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Many company prefer'), singular/plural noun errors ('in some educational system'), and missing articles. These errors can cause occasional difficulty or hesitation for the reader, though they do not entirely obscure the intended meaning, placing this aspect at a Band 5.0.
