Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often seen that learning foreign languages is part of edcuational in systems in several parts of thw world whereas some keep it optional. I think learning a different language is crucial part of education which also presents several key benefits which I will discuss in this essay.

To commence with, learning a foreign language has become utterly important at current time to better communicate and advancement in career for some people. English has become essential to operate and expand for business internationally but it is not a dominant language for several countries. India is one of the many nations which adopted the edcuational system where english is essential for children to learn. Being able to communicate in english provides opportunity for people to get hired in a multi-national companies.

On the other hand, all over the world diversifcation is on the peak which means learning a foriegn language is first step for people to better understand different cultures and values.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The student addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the potential benefits of foreign language study and giving an opinion that it is crucial. However, the essay is severely underdeveloped and cuts off abruptly at only 162 words, which falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Furthermore, the response is divided into only two body paragraphs and lacks a concluding section, meaning ideas are not fully extended. For instance, the point regarding career advancement mentions India and multi-national companies, but lacks depth and adequate support. Because the task response is incomplete and under-length, it falls into the Band 4 category for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to structure the essay with transitional phrases such as 'To commence with' and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is disrupted by the premature ending of the essay and the lack of a proper introduction or conclusion. Paragraphing is inadequate, as the student combines the introductory statement and the first main point into a single dense block of text, followed by just one additional paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or faulty manner. These features reflect the characteristics of Band 5 for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text. Examples include 'edcuational' instead of educational, 'thw' instead of the, 'utterly important at current time', and 'diversifcation is on the peak'. Despite these errors, the general meaning can still be understood. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'multi-national companies' and 'diversifcation', but the frequent spelling mistakes and restricted range place this response firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It is often seen that learning foreign languages is part of edcuational in systems...' which contains a grammatical error ('educational in systems'). There are frequent structural and grammatical inaccuracies, including 'learning a foriegn language is first step' (missing an article) and 'better communicate and advancement in career' (lack of parallel structure). While the sentences are not overly complex and meaning is occasionally maintained, the high frequency of grammatical slips and awkward phrasing aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.
