IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, in some education systems, it becomes a trend to introduce a one or more foreign languages in syllabus. However, some of the education systems are not following this trend. They believe that, it does not require additional foreign languages as a part of syllabus. I personally think that having the knowledge of various languages gives an edge to the individual.

Learning different foreign languages from academics allow people to learn a language quickly and get an oppurtunity to study abroad. Different countries have their specific test to evaluate candidate's proficiency in different modules, such as listening, reading, speaking and writing based on their proficiency level they can get an oppurtunity to study in colleges or universities. For example, if someone wants to study in Germany. He needs to take a "German language test". It has A1, A2, B1 and B2 proficiency levels. To qualify for the admission in colleges or universities, it needs to certain level of proficiency, such as A2.

Moreover, there are certain type of professions require the knowledge of additional languages. For example, someone who wants to work as a tour guide. Tour guiders must know the foreign languages and fluent in communications as well, because they need to translate and guide to tourists. Another best example of language teachers, they also require similar skill of translation in different language to teach their students.

In conclusion, foreign languages should be part of the curriculam in school from early age. It helps individuals to build a career immediately in foreign countries, and they can save their time from learing the additional language after the school or college education.
