In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? 

Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. In my opinion, foreign language study is an integral part of education. It has become essential for children these days to have grip on as many foreign languages as possible so that they can effectively communicate where ever they travel.

Some languages are considered universal such as English language. English language is spoken and understood widely around the world. The essence of English language can be measured from the fact that education system in many countries use English language as a medium of communication such as Pakistan. Although the native language of Pakistan is Urdu, but the education system is English medium.

Therefore, teaching foreign languages in schools can open cross-border opportunities for children for example jobs, foreign education, and business opportunities. Effective communication is the key to success. It is important for a person to know foreign language in order to live and work in a foreign country.

Another very good example is European Union. The formation of EU allowed Europeans to move and work freely in all the member states. It is worth noting that language was a true barrier initially, as all the member states have distinct native language. It was important for the people of the member states to know foreign languages in order for them to travel and work there, as a person is considered to be deaf and mute if he or she doesn't know the language of the resident country.

Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like „Therefore“, „Although“, and „Another very good example is“. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, and the abrupt ending of the text disrupts the flow of the final section. These features demonstrate the characteristics of Band 6, where the arrangement is coherent overall, but some mechanical or incomplete cohesive transitions remain.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as „integral part“, „cross-border opportunities“, and „universal language“. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including „where ever“ instead of wherever, „beleive“ instead of believe, „foriegn“ instead of foreign, and „importat“ instead of important. Additionally, the phrase „have grip on“ is unnatural in this context, and „distinct native language“ should be plural. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching Band 7. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient and reflects the descriptors for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and concessive structures such as „so that they can effectively communicate“ and „Although the native language of Pakistan is Urdu, but the education system is English medium“. This latter sentence contains a minor grammatical interference error by combining „Although“ and „but“. There are also punctuation and structural issues, culminating in the incomplete sentence in the final paragraph. Despite these errors, the majority of the simple sentences are accurate, and meaning is generally clear. The control over grammar and punctuation aligns with Band 6.
