Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, learning a new language plays a vital role in breaking the language barrier in communication overseas. In some parts of the world, in a few educational systems, it is suggested to learn more than one foreign language, while others say it's not required. I personally feel that learning a new language is always beneficial for a child, not only is it beneficial for enhancing skills, but also helps achieve success in the forthcoming life, which I will discuss in the forthcoming paragraph.

The most prominent benefit of learning a foreign language is that children can take overseas classes to learn new skills . With technology, children can take some overseas courses for their further education if they know other languages. Since foreign countries like Canada, the UK, and the USA are teaching them in English only. For example, in India, a percentage of children are taking PSW classes from Canada, as Indian education does not provide them in India. As they learned English during their studies, they were able to enhance their skills.

Moreover, it will be beneficial after education, as English is a common language all over the world and a medium for transferring our thoughts and emotions. For doing overseas business, they need a foreign language to communicate with their clients and business partners .Knowing another language can help them express their ideas more clearly and build stronger professional relationships. In addition, learning a foreign language helps children understand other cultures, traditions and ways of thinking, which can make them more open-minded and respectful towards people from different backgrounds.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language offers several important benefits, including access to international education, better career opportunities and improved cultural understanding. Therefore, I believe foreign language study should be an important part of education because it prepares children to communicate and succeed in an increasingly globalized world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the potential benefits of foreign language study and presenting a clear personal position on its importance in education. The ideas are generally relevant, covering international education, career opportunities, and cultural understanding. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the paragraph regarding online classes and studying abroad in countries like Canada, the UK, and the USA wanders slightly into general commentary rather than fully exploring the direct cognitive or academic benefits of learning a foreign language. To reach a higher level, all aspects of the argument would need to be extended with more specific, tightly focused examples rather than drifting into tangential points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and a definitive concluding paragraph. Information and ideas are generally organized logically, moving from educational benefits to professional and cultural advantages. Cohesive devices are employed, such as "Moreover," "In addition," and "In conclusion," which help guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, as seen with phrases like "in the forthcoming paragraph." Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, but smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the flow to match the requirements of higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "globalized world," "open-minded," and "professional relationships." However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as "forthcoming life" instead of future life, and slight awkwardness in phrasing like "for doing overseas business." Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to demonstrate a more precise and natural control of less common lexical items, avoiding slightly unnatural collocations and repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles, punctuation slips, and occasional tense inconsistencies, such as "As they learned English... they were able to enhance." Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the writer's argument easily. To move further up the scale, the writer would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of sophisticated complex structures with consistent precision.
