Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response addresses the prompt minimally, attempting to discuss the benefits of foreign language study and giving a personal opinion. However, the length requirement of at least 250 words is not met, as the student's response contains only 92 words. Furthermore, the ideas presented are very limited, highly restricted in scope, and remain severely under-developed throughout the text, such as the brief mention that 'a person can communicate with the other person.' To reach a higher level, the writer must fully extend and support their ideas with relevant examples and explanations while ensuring the minimum word count is satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some organisation through the use of a numbered format and conjunctions like 'and' and 'also', but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure across the response. Paragraphing is absent, which hampers readability. Referencing and cohesive devices are inadequate and repetitive, making it difficult to follow the flow of ideas. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer needs to group ideas into logical paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive devices naturally to connect sentences and arguments effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying on simple terms such as 'person', 'communicate', 'ideas', and 'community'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, including awkward phrasing like 'acroos coummunity' and spelling mistakes. The lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying very basic thoughts, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for more complex discussions. To progress, the student should expand their vocabulary by learning less common lexical items and practicing accurate word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of structures, consisting mostly of run-on sentences joined by commas and coordinating conjunctions. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'individual can understand better' lacking an article, and awkward punctuation patterns. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must incorporate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with better control over grammatical boundaries, articles, and punctuation.
