Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that educational institutes should include a foreign language in their syllabus. Some institutes prefere to include it, although many does not. It is totally depends on them. From my perspective, to learn another language is asset nowadays. It is very crucial for new generation to have this skill.

To begin with some advantages of learning a foreign language. Currently, many individual are trying to go abroad for better future. Therefore, because of language they cannot survive there. For instance, Canada is promoting the french language. The first language of Canada is French and second is English. If your english is good, you can suvive but in many region of Canada french is compulsory. If you don't understand and speak french many companies may reject your resume. Likewise in Montreal, many people started to learn french for these reasons.

Foreign language is a skill at recent decades. Many countries give immigration to those who know their native language. The peson who have knowledge about any other language, he/she can do a lot of things. For instance, they can get job in abroad easily, get the immigration of required country and also can earn huge amount from teaching. All educational systems should teach a foreign language from 1st grade for better future of their students.

Secondly, to promote a foreign language can open many new opportunities of individuals. It can also boost countrys' economy. Parents should select the school for their children in which a foreign language included in the course.

Eventually, this is very crucial because many developed countries are giving chance to people by immigration, but for those who know their native language.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing potential benefits, such as job prospects and immigration opportunities, and gives an opinion that foreign language study is an important part of education. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For example, the mention of Canada and Montreal is somewhat repetitive and lacks specific, well-supported elaboration. The writer attempts to express a position, but the reasoning tends to be generalised rather than fully extended throughout the essay. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide more fully explored examples and expand on how learning foreign languages benefits individuals and educational systems globally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks used to group ideas, such as introducing advantages in the second paragraph and summarizing conclusions at the end. However, the essay lacks clear overall progression, leading to a somewhat disjointed feel between paragraphs. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, or occasionally inaccurate, as seen in transitions like 'To begin with some advantages' and 'Secondly'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical transitions between sentences are sometimes missing or abrupt, meaning the flow of information requires more careful control. To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence using a wider variety of accurate and natural cohesive markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about learning languages and employment. There are noticeable lexical errors and issues with word choice, word form, and collocation throughout the text, such as 'prefere', 'asset' used without an article ('an asset'), 'individual' instead of 'individuals', 'suvive', 'peson', and 'countrys'' instead of 'countries''. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and attempts at less common words often result in inaccurate forms. To advance, the student must broaden their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to spelling and pluralization, and use terms in appropriate grammatical forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement ('many does not', 'It is totally depends'), article omission ('to learn another language is asset', 'in abroad'), and prepositions. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also show recurring inaccuracies. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader and reflect a weak control over basic and complex grammatical patterns alike. To progress, the student should focus on eliminating basic agreement and structural errors while mastering the accurate production of complex sentences.
