Student answer (Band 6.5)
Learning an extra language can bring potential benefits and opportunities in the future for anyone. While some educational systems expect youngsters to study at least one foreign language or more, others do not demand learning a foreign language. This essay will elucidate potential advantages of learning another language and will elaborate on why it is an important factor in the learning system.
To commence with, learning a non- native language can broaden the perspectives of people and add value to their personal and professional profiles. When somebody is fluent in more languages, they can easily communicate with other people from different geographies, allowing them to explore different cultures. For example, when someone is travelling overseas, knowing a few languages can help to handle situations without hassle. It helps not only to understand others' cultural backgrounds but also to communicate with them easily and experience and enjoy their cultural aspects. In addition to that, if a person is well educated in a few languages, it brings additional value to one's profile. Especially, people who have the ability to speak more than one language get priority in the interviews.
The education system in a country plays a major role in promoting learning additional languages, as school is the foundational level of this process. Some governments have identified the value of this and have taken steps to include teaching a second language in the syllabus. For instance, in British Columbia, students must choose another language in Grade 7, which make them easier to face competitions and challenges in future. If an education system is just focusing only on one aspect, that cannot be considered as a well- structured system. The responsibility of any education system is to ensure children are competent to face any situation with minimum issues.
To conclude, learning is a process which never ends. The more we learn, the more we become educated. Therefore, the government has the utmost responsibility to shape the education system,by alowing children to learn more than one language.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both potential benefits and giving a clear opinion on whether foreign language study is an important part of education. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas such as broadening perspectives, cultural exploration, and career advantages are introduced and supported with relevant examples, such as travelling overseas and job interviews. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, which is characteristic of this performance level. For instance, the point about British Columbia students facing future competitions could be explored in greater depth to push into higher bands. The response fully satisfies the basic requirements of addressing the prompt while showing a good selection of relevant arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To commence with', 'In addition to that', and 'To conclude', although some referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. For instance, 'if a person is well educated in a few languages' relies on repetitive cohesive patterns rather than smooth, seamless lexical chains. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout, representing a solid organizational structure that guides the reader successfully from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'elucidate', 'geographies', and 'well-structured system'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'non- native language' instead of 'foreign language', 'handle situations without hassle' instead of 'navigate situations smoothly', and punctuation/spacing issues like 'system,by alowing'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, such as 'alowing' with a single 'l', but these do not impede communication. The lexical resource demonstrates sufficient flexibility to convey the main points clearly, though greater precision and natural collocation of uncommon vocabulary are needed to reach the next level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional clauses ('if an education system is just focusing') and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'which make them easier' instead of 'makes', missing articles in 'get priority in the interviews' where 'the' is unnecessary, and preposition usage inside patterns. Punctuation errors also appear, such as the missing space after commas in 'education system,by alowing'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. The control of grammar is generally sound, featuring a reliable mix of structures that successfully communicate the writer's arguments.
