Student answer (Band 6.0)

The issue of learning a foreign language has gained significant attention recently. This essay will first discuss about the advantages of learning foreign language, and then I will discuss my perspective about learning the foreign language.

To begin with, foreign language plays a crucial role for students to understand the history and culture of a particular region. This is primarily because the culture is deeply connected to the regional spoken languages. Also, while going on international trips or doing businesses in other countries, the local spoken language of particular nation will help them a lot. To illustrate, In Nepal, many colleges have made Sanskrit as a mandatory subject; hence, it helps to many students who were planning to study Ayurveda in India as Ayurveda books are only written in Sanskrit language.

Regarding the importance of foreign language, I think that students should focus more on the core subjects such as Mathematics and Science rather than focusing on foreign language. The main rationale behind this is that the core subjects with help the students in securing high wage jobs. However, foeign language will only be benefical if they are travelling to different countries for higher studies or for jobs. To exemplify, the Gujarat government has made only regional language compulsory so that the student can save the time from learning a new language and should focus more on core subjects.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that foeign language should be optional and it should depend on the student rathar than making it mandatory for them to study.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you identify benefits, including cultural understanding and communicating during travel or business, and state that foreign-language study should be optional. The examples about Sanskrit and Gujarat help make your position concrete. However, the benefits are not developed equally: the Sanskrit example focuses on a language used for Ayurveda study, so its connection to foreign-language learning and the broader benefits could be explained more clearly. Your view that mathematics and science lead to better-paid jobs is also asserted rather than supported, and the essay does not fully weigh this against the benefits already mentioned. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a directly relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph giving your view, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Regarding the importance,” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to follow, and the central position is apparent. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and progression. At times, however, linking feels formulaic, and the relationship between ideas is not always smooth. For example, the Sanskrit example follows a point about travel and business without a clear transition explaining the shift to education. Use references and transitions that explicitly connect each example to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “history and culture,” “regional spoken languages,” “core subjects,” and “mandatory subject.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some attempts at more formal vocabulary are appropriate. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “discuss about” is not the natural pattern, “help to many students” is awkward, and “foeign,” “benefical,” and “rathar” are misspelled. “High wage jobs” is also less natural than a standard collocation such as “well-paid jobs.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and proofread spelling, especially in repeated key terms such as “foreign language.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “This is primarily because…” and a conditional structure beginning “if they are travelling…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems persist, however. In “foreign language plays a crucial role,” the article is missing; “the core subjects with help” has an incorrect verb form; and “the student can save the time … and should focus” does not maintain a clear parallel structure. The opening sentence also uses “discuss about,” which is an incorrect grammatical pattern. Review articles, verb forms, and parallel constructions, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
