Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's fast-paced life, people are depending more and more on restaurants and convenience food rather than home-cooked food in order to fulfill their hunger. While consuming frozen and packaged food saves time and effort, it can lead to serious health related issues among consumers.

The greatest benefit of pre-cooked food is that it is easy to eat, and does not require considerable amount of time and effort to prepare. In addition, its taste is much appreciated by the younger generations as compared to the one made at home. For example, I used to buy the packaged meals often, at least once a day, as an international student due to lack of time needed to prepare a meal. Due to busy schedule at college and at work, eating convenience food is considered as a lot more easier option.

The main problem arisen from consuming frequently the outside food is its negative impact on individual's health. It contains trans-fat and low quality ingredients, which leads to health problems like diabetes and obesity. For instances, obesity has become very common among teenagers these days, which is due to the consumption of pre-cooked meals. The fast food chains like Mac Donald's and Wendy's attract youngsters with the seducing advertisements and unique offers.

The consumption of frozen and packaged food has been increased significantly, neglecting the importance if home-cooked food. On one hand, the restaurant meals and convenience food helps are preferred due to their ease of consuming without putting any effort or time to make, on the other hand, it can increase the risk of obesity and diseases like diabetes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of relying on convenience food. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the discussion on health impacts could be more deeply explored beyond mentioning obesity and diabetes. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the points made in the body paragraphs rather than synthesizing them. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported with more detailed explanation or analysis rather than just listing examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'For example', and 'On one hand' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the one made at home', which is slightly ambiguous. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the final paragraph feels like a summary that does not add new depth to the argument. Overall, the structure is effective and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'seducing advertisements', though 'seductive' would be more accurate. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'fulfill their hunger' or 'ease of consuming'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'The main problem arisen from' (should be 'arising from') and 'The consumption... has been increased' (should be 'has increased'). While the range is sufficient, more precise collocations would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'does not require considerable amount of time' (missing article 'a'), 'eating convenience food is considered as a lot more easier option' (redundant 'as' and incorrect comparative structure), and 'neglecting the importance if home-cooked food' (typo 'if' instead of 'of'). These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of full control over complex structures, which is expected at higher bands.
