Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of relying on convenience food. The position is clear from the introduction, and the main ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about cost is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. While the response covers all parts of the prompt, the supporting arguments could be more detailed to reach a higher band. The conclusion provides a clear summary and a recommendation, which helps in maintaining a consistent position throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Apart from this', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as the transition between the health impacts and the financial impacts in the second body paragraph. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'processed food', 'preservatives', and 'shelf life'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and spelling errors, such as 'derogatary' (derogatory), 'convinance' (convenience), 'occationally' (occasionally), and 'purchased it' (purchasing). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of the language used. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and more natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'processed food have', 'packaged meals and frozen food helps') and article usage. There are also punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('by consuming', 'it will effect'). While the writer attempts complex structures, these are often marred by errors. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score.
