Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays in many areas of the world transportation has become a general issue. Public's reliance on the government transportation has reduced overall instead people are using their own mode of commute like by car. I believe that it's negative effect outweighs the positive effect.

One the one hand, this has led to pollution and traffic problem as the number of cars increasing on the roads not only emits gas that is harmful to our ecosystem but also has caused tremendous traffic on the roads. Additionally, commute has become so much hard and stressful that numerous individuals say that it consumes one third amount of time of their day which they could have spent with their family or loved ones. For instance, corporates found that employee's working from home tend to give better output compared to the ones working in the firm's office. In addition to it many companies now have shifted to this model as it saved lot of finances for the organization as well.

On the other hand, the locale populace rely on personal car because it saves a significant amount of time and is also more convenient and comfortable. Moreover, it is also very peaceful and calm rather than to travel in public transit were their is noise and crowding. To illustrate, some workers said that travelling by transit took almost hours to reach to their workplace but when they used their own vehicle it saved more than half of the time of their commute increasing their productivity.

To conclude, a large amount of countries face this issue. Hence, by the help of the government and citizen they can take some decisive steps to curb it. However, it needs an enormous effort from all as it could not be achieved by few.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying the effects of private car reliance and expressing a clear position that the negative impacts outweigh the positive. The ideas are relevant, such as pollution, traffic congestion, and the convenience of personal transport. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding working from home is a bit tangential to the core issue of transportation reliance. Additionally, the conclusion introduces a call for government action that was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs, making the development feel slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored and directly linked to the prompt's core question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'In addition to it many companies now have shifted'. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the essay follows a standard structure that makes the argument easy to follow despite some minor lapses in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'ecosystem', 'commute', 'productivity', and 'public transit'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'locale populace' (should be 'local population') and 'saved lot of finances' (should be 'saved a lot of money'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Improving collocations would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('number of cars increasing' should be 'is increasing'), article usage ('the government transportation'), and prepositional errors ('travelling by transit took almost hours to reach to their workplace'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining the use of complex sentence structures.
