Student answer (Band 6.5)

All around the world, most of the people really on their personal vehicles for everyday commute. This thing has both positive and negative aspects. The essay will talk about how these cars gives convenience and save time and also how they pollute the earth. I think the cons are much serious then the pros.

With the advancement of technology, cars have become an important part of everyone’s life. For our daily commute, cars have been used by 50-60% of people. Because of cars, people do not have to wait and can reach to the exact destination of their wish. Moreover, private vehicles also save times, as these is no waiting time like other public transport. For instance, I can reach my collage in 25 minutes, while

It takes me 2 hours via public transit.

However, the negative aspect cannot be underestimated. Having too many personal vehicles becomes a big cause of increasing pollution in metropolitan cities. Gas engine cars leave many toxic smoke as they drive. Recently, an environmentalist has conducted a test where it was found that the level of pollution has been increased by 30% in last two years due to increased numbers of private cars. That is why moving back to public transport will be the best choice in order to reduce the pollution.

In conclusion, even though these are many benefits of owning a private vehicle like convenience and no waiting time, the drawback like more pollution is more serious. Therefore, public transportation stands out the best solution which also give benefits of vehicle and reduce pollution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it discusses the effects of private car reliance and provides a clear position that the negative impacts outweigh the positive ones. The ideas are relevant, such as convenience versus environmental pollution. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the personal example of the commute to college is effective, the argument regarding environmental impact could be more deeply explored with more sophisticated reasoning. The conclusion effectively summarizes the position, but overall, the essay stays at a functional level of development rather than a fully extended one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. There are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow, such as the awkward transition in the second paragraph: 'while It takes me 2 hours'. Despite these minor flaws, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'metropolitan cities' and 'toxic smoke', but there are also instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'This thing' (too informal) and 'much serious then' (incorrect comparative structure). The spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'really on' (rely on), 'cars gives' (subject-verb agreement), 'these is no' (these are no), and 'has been increased' (passive voice misuse). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in capitalization and sentence structure. The frequency of these errors indicates that the student has not yet achieved full control over complex structures, though the errors do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
