Student answer (Band 6.0)

I agree with the given statement that having a own car for travelling is important all around the globe. In my opinion, this trend has both merits and demerits in our lives.

On the one hand, there are various reasons why communting on private cars is paly a vital role in people life. Firstly, this kind of way helps to save our precious time as well as energy. When people travel on their own cars one place to another, they do not need to wait for buses and trains for long time. At the same time, in many parts of the world the public transportation is not good so that people prefer to go by cars. Secondly, these days unemployment rate is inclining day day because of this many people unable to fulfill their basic needs. Companies may hire new people for the production of cars.

On the other hand, there are a plenty of negative effects having a private vehicle. If everyone prefer to go any destination by their cars, it can increase the count of vehicles on the road. As a result, individuals have to face traffic congestion everyday. For example, yesterday, i had appointment with a doctor but because of traffic on highway, i reached late there and he suggest me book another appointment. Moreover, these kinds of vehicles release toxics emissions into the environment such as carbon dioxide and monoxide which leads to air pollution. It not only puts adverse impact on physical health but also on mental health.

In conclusion, although travelling on private cars aids to save our time and energy, but the negative impact of this trend cannot be neglected due to several reasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the ways reliance on cars affects life and providing a balanced view on whether these effects are positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the point regarding unemployment and car production is a bit tangential and lacks a strong logical connection to the core theme of 'reliance on cars'. While the arguments are relevant, they could be extended with more depth to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and simply restates the prompt rather than synthesising the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the transition 'due to several reasons' in the conclusion, which does not effectively summarise the preceding arguments. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'having a own car', 'communting on private cars', and 'inclining day day'. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'traffic congestion' and 'toxic emissions', which is positive. However, the repetition of basic words and the presence of minor errors in collocation and word formation prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on learning more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the public transportation'), subject-verb agreement ('public transportation is not good'), and preposition usage ('appointment with a doctor'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and the lowercase 'i'. While the student attempts complex sentences, these are often where the errors are most noticeable. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence structure variety would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
