Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the ways reliance on cars affects life and whether these effects are positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'jobs' and 'company premises' is vague and lacks clear logical connection to the benefits of private transport. While the environmental and social impacts are mentioned, they could be more thoroughly supported with specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To began with', 'Moreover', 'On the flip side', and 'Furthermore' are used to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of these devices are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'To began with' (should be 'To begin with'). Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, which prevents the essay from achieving a higher score for cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'environmental', 'carbon dioxide', and 'governmental investments'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Most masses' instead of 'Most people', 'save of time' instead of 'saving time', and 'suspected' used incorrectly in the context of traffic. The range is sufficient for communication but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The use of personal vehicles have', 'public transport use have declined') and incorrect verb forms ('To began with'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and sentence structure. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
