Student answer (Band 6.0)

The essence of this given statement regarding usage of personal cars for commuting from one place to another is a debatable and disputable issues in today's contemporary world. Here, i would like to discuss both advantage and the disadvantage of this trend with some examples and end the discussion with my opinion.

To start with, there is a group of people who completely depends on their own cars to commute, they are of the opinion that this kills the time, and they did not need to worry for arranging a means of transportation whenever they want to travel. Furthermore, in today's modern world maintaining a own car is also know as a symbol of luxury. moreover, a recent study in oxford university reveals that many people can't find a ride at night times and even though if they find it after a long waiting period, the ride comes with a heavy charge then usual. Driving your own car gives you comfort and privacy at the same time.

On the other hand, there is a army of people who justify using alternative to a personal car. firstly they find it cheap using public transportations or taking rides or even doing car pooling. A study reveals that people living in big cities such as Toronto does not have a option of car parking or it cost them heavy, instead people prefer to use public transportation. secondly, many youngsters who are travelling to a same spot for instance a public concert always prefer a car pooling option to save fuel and resolve parking issues.

To conclude with my opinion, I'm inclined to the positivity of this trend for my own reasons such as for instance we can react quickly to any medical emergency in our family if we have our own car, we don't need to wait long for bus, train or even a cab. In my opinion the impact of this is more positive then negative.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the effects of car reliance and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding 'luxury' is mentioned but not fully explored in the context of how it changes our lifestyle. The conclusion introduces a new point about medical emergencies, which is a strong argument but would have been better placed in the body paragraphs to allow for more detailed analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is supported by a clear explanation or a more specific, well-integrated example rather than just stating the point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To start with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To conclude with my opinion'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for instance, the phrase 'there is a army of people' is a bit informal and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'maintaining a own car' (maintaining one's own car) and 'heavy charge then usual' (higher charge than usual). The use of 'army of people' is slightly informal for an academic-style essay. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'car pooling' and 'public transportation', the overall range is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('a group of people who completely depends'), article usage ('a own car'), and punctuation errors. The sentence 'even though if they find it after a long waiting period' is grammatically awkward. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading and mastering basic sentence construction would significantly improve the score.
