Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many part of world, people increasingly rely on private car for transportation. This dependence has significantly changed the way people live, affecting daily lives , health and environment. Although private cars provide convenience and freedom, I believe that their overall effects tend to be negative.

One major way that relience on cars affects our lives making more people dependent on individual transportation. Cars allow people to travel long distances quickly and conveniently, making it easier to commute to work, attend meetings or visit family members. However, this convenience can encourged people to use their car for short distance. As a result, people may walk or cycle less, which can contribute to unhealthy lifestyles. For example, someone who drives for grocery store nearby become physcially less active.

Another significant effect is the impact on environment and urban life. A large number of private vehicles produce considerable air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, heavy reliance on cars can cause traffic congestion, longer commuting time and increased demand for parking spaces. Cities may therefore need to develop large areas of land to roads and parking lots rather than parks or public facilities. For instance, during rush hours, commuters in major cities spend hours stucks in traffic, which can cause stress and less time available for family and others activites.

Nevertheless, private cars have some positive effects. They provide flexibility for people who live in area where public transportation is limited. car can particulary used for families, olderly people and those who need to transport heavy items,

In conclusion, although private car provide siginficant benefits, reliance on them generally has more negative effects. It can reduce physical activity, increas pollution, and congestion. Therefore, governments should encourage reliable publice transportation and other alternatives to private cars.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the ways reliance on cars affects life and providing a clear position that the effects are predominantly negative. The ideas are relevant, covering health, environmental impact, and urban planning. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the points are clear, they could be extended further with more specific, nuanced examples. For instance, the discussion on health is a good start but remains a bit general. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as health or environmental impact. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'In addition', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow (e.g., the transition between the second and third paragraphs). Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, which aligns with the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'greenhouse gas emissions' and 'urban life'. However, there are several spelling errors ('relience', 'physcially', 'stucks', 'particulary', 'olderly', 'publice') and some awkward word choices ('encourged people to use their car for short distance'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision and better proofreading to reach a higher band. The range is sufficient but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in many part of world'), subject-verb agreement ('someone who drives... become'), and verb forms ('can encourged', 'can particulary used'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas or unnecessary spaces. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction.
