Student answer (Band 8.0)
negative effects on the way we live.
One major advantage of private cars is that they provide flexibility and save time. People can travel directly from one place to another without having to follow public transport schedules or routes. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who live in areas where public transportation is limited. For example, parents can use their cars to take their children to school, go to work and complete household errands in a single journey. As a result, having a private vehicle can make daily life more convenient and efficient.
However, widespread dependence on cars can negatively affect both individuals and society. Firstly, a large number of private vehicles contributes to traffic congestion, particularly in major cities. People may spend hours commuting to work, which can increase stress and reduce the amount of time available for family, leisure and other activities. Secondly, heavy use of cars contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which can harm the environment and public health. Furthermore, relying on cars may encourage a less active lifestyle because people tend to drive even when walking or cycling would be possible. Over time, this can contribute to various health problems.
Another important consequence is that excessive car use can weaken public transportation systems. When most people prefer private vehicles, governments and businesses may have less incentive to improve buses, trains and other forms of public transport. This can create a cycle in which people become even more dependent on cars because alternative means of transportation are inconvenient or unavailable.
In conclusion, private cars undoubtedly make everyday transportation more convenient and provide people with greater freedom. Nevertheless, excessive reliance on them can lead to congestion, pollution, stress and less active lifestyles. Therefore, I believe that the overall effects of heavy dependence on private cars are more negative than positive, and greater investment in efficient public transportation would help create a healthier and more sustainable way of living.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify both the ways reliance on cars affects our lives—such as flexibility, congestion, and health impacts—and provide a clear position that the effects are predominantly negative. The ideas are well-developed, with logical progression from the benefits of convenience to the broader societal and environmental consequences. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your argument. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, perhaps global, examples to further illustrate the points, such as mentioning specific urban planning challenges in major metropolitan areas, which would add depth to your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with the benefits and moving to the negative impacts on society and infrastructure. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However', 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help the reader follow your argument without difficulty. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'widespread dependence', 'traffic congestion', 'greenhouse gas emissions', and 'sustainable way of living' are used accurately and naturally. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of your argument. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is strong, and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('When most people prefer private vehicles, governments... may have less incentive') and relative clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings or more advanced syntactic structures, such as inversion or participle clauses, to demonstrate even greater flexibility.
