Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many parts of the world, people increasingly depend on private cars for their daily transportation. This growing reliance has brought significant changes to people's life, particularly in terms of convenience and mobility. Although private vehicles offer advantages I believe that their overall impact is more negative because of traffic congestion, environmental pollution and reduced physical activities.

One significant way in which private cars have improve people's life is by providing greater convenience and independence. Unlike public transport, cars allows individuals to travel according to their owns schedules and reach their destinations directly. In addition, private vehicles can save time for those who have long commute or need to make several stops during day. For example, parents can conveniently drop their children at school and travel to work errands without relying on public transportation.

However, widespread use of private vehicles has also caused several serious problems. The major issue is traffic congestion, especially in large cities where thousands of vehicles use roads everyday. This can lead to lengthy commuting times and increased stress. Furthermore, petrol and diesel vehicles produce carbon emissions causing air pollution and climate change. Another concern is that excessive dependence on cards results in sedentary lifestyle. For instance, some individual may choose to drive even when their destination is only a short distance way which cause inactive lifestyle.

In conclusion, private cars have made life more convenient and faster. Nevertheless, their widespread use has cause problems such as traffic congestion, pollution and inactivity. Therefore, I believe that the negative effects of relying on private cars outweigh the benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the ways in which reliance on cars affects life (convenience, mobility, congestion, pollution, and health) and maintain a consistent position that the negative effects outweigh the positive ones. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as parents dropping children at school or the impact of short-distance driving on physical activity. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of each point is slightly more nuanced; for example, you could briefly touch upon the socio-economic implications of car reliance to add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that referencing is always precise. For instance, in the third paragraph, 'cards' is used instead of 'cars', which slightly disrupts the flow of the argument. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and supports the logical development of your position.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'carbon emissions', and 'traffic congestion'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'improve' instead of 'improved', 'owns' instead of 'own', and the typo 'cards' instead of 'cars'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate collocations and proofreading for minor slips will help you achieve a more sophisticated lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although private vehicles offer advantages I believe that their overall impact is more negative...'. While you show control over complex structures, there are several recurring grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'cars allows' instead of 'cars allow') and missing articles (e.g., 'during day' instead of 'during the day'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
