Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the ways reliance on cars affects our lives and providing a clear position that the development is largely negative. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples such as convenience, traffic congestion, and environmental impact. However, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence. This prevents the conclusion from being fully developed and impacts the overall task completion. While the main body paragraphs are well-structured, the lack of a proper conclusion and the unfinished final sentence mean the response does not fully develop the argument to its logical end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Ideas are organized into distinct paragraphs, with the first body paragraph focusing on the benefits and the second on the drawbacks. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'furthermore', 'As a Result', and 'However' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction from the body. While the flow is generally good, the abrupt ending disrupts the coherence of the final section. Overall, the text is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is clearly signaled throughout the majority of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at more precise language like 'irregular hours', 'practical option', and 'financial burden'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'owing a car' (should be 'owning') and 'fule' (should be 'fuel'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. The vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, though it does not demonstrate a wide range of less common lexical items used with high precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'In Many Parts', 'Buses'), punctuation issues (e.g., 'flexibility , although'), and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'a large numbers of people'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede communication. The sentence structure is generally sound, but the frequency of minor errors in punctuation and capitalization prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The unfinished sentence at the end also contributes to the lack of grammatical control in the final portion of the text.
