Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative ways reliance on private cars affects our lives. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning security, time-saving benefits, and the downsides of traffic congestion and pollution. For instance, the student notes that 'private cars are more comfortable and peaceful' and points out environmental impacts like respiratory and skin issues. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize in places, and some points could be more deeply developed to reach a higher band. Overall, the prompt requirements are fully met with relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall organization with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To sum up'. However, some of the cohesive links feel mechanical or awkward, such as 'Let us ponder on it' and the phrasing in the conclusion which suffers from run-on structure and punctuation issues ('So, both people and government...'). Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical progression within the conclusion is slightly disrupted by grammatical errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items like 'transportation', 'congestion', and 'respiratory'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'tranportation', 'afftects', 'frusturation', 'insted', and 'benifits'. Collocations are sometimes slightly unnatural, for example, 'brought the security and safety' or 'made more congestion'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control shows frequent minor inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. Examples include conditional and relative clauses like 'People who cannot adjust with others, feel uncomfortable...' and 'While, with the rapid rate in crimes, where it seems impossible...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing articles ('reach at their destinations'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward sentence fragments ('While, with the rapid rate...'). Although these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they persist throughout the response and prevent it from reaching a higher band score.
