Student answer (Band 6.0)

In majority of the world, public tend to use private cars for transportation. In this essay I will discuss the reasons to support that this trend has both negative and positive aspects. But the negative effects outweighs the positive effects by a small margin.

Almost everyon in the world drives a car, specially in cities and towns. In the contemporary society where time is one of the major aspects of efficient living, cars play an important role in that. Private ownership of a car allwos its owner to save time by efficiently reaching to thier destination. Not only that but safety and convenience are also major factors which force middle-class people to rely on cars rather than other transportation method. For example an individual who lives in Brampton but works in Toronto, it would take two hours by bus to reach his workplace. Whereas it would only take an hour if he decides to own a car.

However, we should not neglect the negative aspects of relying on a private car. Changes in environment like Global warming and extreme temperatures are heavily caused by gases emitted via cars and electronics. The rapid increase in trend of owning multiple cars in one household is detrimental to our surroundings. People prefer to have more number of cars than actually needed just beacuse of convenience. For example a couple who work at different places would agree to buy two cars for convenience instead of compromising on public transport.

Saying this I would like to conclude that however essential cars may be today but we should keep the safety of our environment in mind. Public should opt for EV's and other transportation methods whenever possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing how the reliance on private cars affects our way of living and explicitly evaluating whether these effects are positive or negative. The writer adopts a clear position from the introduction, stating that while there are both positive and negative aspects, the negative effects ultimately outweigh the positive ones. Ideas are generally well-supported with relevant examples, such as the commuting comparison between Brampton and Toronto, which adds practical context. However, some arguments could be extended further; for instance, the environmental discussion touches on global warming but groups cars and electronics together somewhat loosely. Despite this minor weakness, all aspects of the prompt are covered competently, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 range. We will award a solid Band 6.5 for addressing all prompt requirements with relevant examples while acknowledging room for deeper extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the issue, and a distinct concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, such as the time-saving benefits versus the environmental drawbacks. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Saying this I would like to conclude' is somewhat informal and awkward, and referencing in sentences like 'cars play an important role in that' lacks a precise antecedent. Furthermore, there are minor cohesive slips between sentences. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, justifying a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contemporary society', 'detrimental', and 'convenience'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'majority' instead of 'the majority', 'allwos' (allows), 'thier' (their), 'everyon' (everyone), 'specially' (especially), and 'beacuse' (because). Additionally, phrasing like 'rapid increase in trend' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate for an adequate vocabulary range marred by frequent spelling and minor collocation slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('In the contemporary society where time is one of the major aspects...'). There is good control of verb tenses in several complex sentences, but errors in grammar and punctuation do occur. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'the negative effects outweighs', missing articles ('In majority of the world', 'transportation method'), and awkward prepositional usage ('reaching to their destination'). Although these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning without severe difficulty. This balanced profile fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptor.
