Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world personal transportation has indeed become a more used form of transportation compared to public transport in many countries of the world. This can be due to a lot of factors. People have to go to work early and on time, therefore they need to have access to a fast, dependable form of transport compared to busses or trains which are comparitvely slower and can be late from schedule. Moreover, many places are simply unacessible by public transit, whic raises another challenge for people living in those places. Moreover, many parts of the world simply do not have a proper and reliable transit network to support its citizens, who are thus forced to buy cars or personal vehicles to go anywhere around the city. Examples of this can be found in many cities across America.

This reliance on private transportaion has affected the way we live by drastically forming the infrastructure around the world and many mega cities especially to be hugely car dependedent. A lot of modern cities have large highways, complex intersections and interchanges and massive parking lots to accomodate the ever increasing number of cars and traffic on the roads. This has affected the normal pedestrian behavior as they get less space to walk and travel and are in danger of being hit by these vehicles moving at fast speeds.

The effects of this have mostly been negative. Public transportation at its best is simply a lot better than private transportation can ever be. Busses and Trains carry huge amounts of people at once compared to a few that can fit in a car. They are more frequent and also require way less space compared to the road infrastructure needed to handle large amounts of traffic in a city. Public Transportation also helps people in a city connect and interact with each other compared to every one being in theor own bubble in their own vehocles travelling to their desitaintons. Living in Vancouver, Canada as an international student without a car, public transit is a major boon to my life making my travel to univeristy and work easier and afforadble than haing to buy and maintain a car. It also helps to meet with my friends and make new ones on the way to our university as we all share a destination and have somehing in common.

Overall, the reliance of people towards personal trasnportation has caused a lot of changes to how we live our lives and the infrastructure around us is thought and built. It also has made us more alone and sepearte to others as veryone is in their own bubbles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task thoroughly. You clearly explain how reliance on private cars affects our lives by shaping urban infrastructure around highways and parking lots, and you discuss pedestrian safety. Furthermore, you present a clear position that the overall effects tend to be negative, supporting this with relevant comparisons to public transportation and drawing effectively from your personal experience living in Vancouver, Canada. Your ideas are well extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the prompt's requirements. To reach a higher band, you could refine some of the generalizations in the opening paragraph, but overall, all parts of the prompt are fully and clearly addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You have used paragraphing appropriately to separate the introduction, the discussion on infrastructure, the comparison with public transit, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'This can be due to', and 'The effects of this' are used to guide the reader through your arguments. However, there are instances where referencing could be smoother, and cohesive phrases are occasionally repetitive (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'Moreover'). Despite these minor issues, the logical flow is easy to follow and the overall arrangement is coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary for the task. You successfully attempt less common vocabulary items such as 'infrastructure', 'interchanges', and 'pedestrian behavior'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'comparitvely' instead of comparatively, 'unacessible' instead of inaccessible, 'dependedent' instead of dependent, 'accomodate' instead of accommodate, and 'theor' instead of their. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent you from achieving a higher band score. Paying closer attention to spelling and precision in word collocation will significantly improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like structures effectively (e.g., 'People have to go to work early and on time, therefore they need to have access to a fast, dependable form of transport...'). There are some grammatical errors and typos present, such as 'reliance of people towards' instead of reliance on, and spelling slips like 'sepearte' and 'desitaintons'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though comma splices occasionally occur. The majority of your sentences are comprehensible, and the mix of structures shows an adequate range for this band level, though greater accuracy in prepositions and spelling is needed.
