Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many parts of the globe, individuals are dependent on private cars for travelling. In my opinion, this trend has benefits such as increased comfort and flexibility; and drawbacks such as rise in the air pollution and road accidents.

To begin with, private cars allow passengers to travel to many distant destinations at thier own convenience. They can drive through different routes and follow their own schedule, which saves their time. Moreover, cars are more comforatble than public transit, particularly in bad weather conditions such as rain, snowfall. Thus, realiane on private cars improves travel experience. For example, according to a survey conducted by Science Daily, approximately 8 out of 10 individuals has shared that they would prefer to travel in their own cars than using public transporation as it is more convenient.

On the other hand, we can not ignore that the use of private cars is harmful for our environment. The toxic gas emission from private vehicles makes the air impure to breathe, which cause serious haelth diseases such as lungs cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, rise in the number of road vehicles has increased road traffic, which sometimes cause accidents. For example, BBC news has reported that in the last decade the number of road accidents has doubled. Therefore, the over realiane on private vehicles has compromised safety.

However, government should raise awareness among public about environmental issues through proper educational programs. Also, strict road safety rules should be implemented to avoid unnecessary accidents.

In conclusion, although use of priavte cars has offered many benefits such as comfort and flexibility, it has also given a rise in the number of road accidents and incresed air pollution. Therefore, the use of private vehicles should be regulated properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the ways reliance on private cars affects our lives and discussing whether these effects are predominantly positive or negative. The introduction outlines a clear position, stating that cars provide comfort and flexibility while simultaneously causing pollution and accidents. Throughout the body paragraphs, relevant ideas are presented and supported with examples, such as referencing a Science Daily survey and BBC news reporting. Although some of the examples are slightly generalised, they effectively extend the arguments. The writer also includes a concluding summary that reinforces the initial stance. Overall, the task is well managed in accordance with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving to advantages in the first body paragraph, disadvantages in the second, and a final conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical, and minor mechanical errors in punctuation prevent the text from reaching a higher band. Overall, the writing is coherent and logically sequenced, fully aligning with Band 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasings such as 'distant destinations', 'bad weather conditions', 'toxic gas emission', and 'cardiovascular diseases'. There is evidence of flexibility and a sufficient grasp of style. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'thier' instead of 'their', 'comforatble' instead of 'comfortable', 'realiane' instead of 'reliance', 'haelth' instead of 'health', and 'priavte' instead of 'private'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively utilising relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'private cars allow passengers to travel... which saves their time' and 'if it is more convenient'. There is good control over punctuation and sentence structure in many parts of the essay. However, some grammatical errors occur, particularly with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'cause serious haelth diseases' instead of 'causes' and '8 out of 10 individuals has shared' instead of 'have shared'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6 performance.
