Student answer (Band 8.0)
In modern society, private personal vehicles have become the primary mode of transit for millions of people around the globe. While car ownership provides unprecedented personal flexibility and freedom, heavy reliance on automobiles profoundly shapes urban design, social interactions, and physical health, leading to consequences that are overall far more negative than positive.
The widespread reliance on personal vehicles fundamentally alters how human settlements function and how individuals organize their daily routines. Firstly, urban planning has shifted dramatically to accommodate traffic, resulting in suburban sprawl where residential neighborhoods are physically separated from commercial hubs, making walking or cycling impractical. Secondly, car reliance changes daily schedules by forcing commuting individuals to factor traffic congestion, parking availability, and fuel expenses directly into their daily budgeting and time management. Finally, automobile dominance has fostered a culture of individual isolation, where people experience their daily commute in solitary bubbles rather than interacting within shared public spaces like buses or trains.
Although private cars offer individual benefits such as door-to-door convenience, comfort, and direct control over one’s schedule, the aggregate effects on society are overwhelmingly negative. Environmental degradation is the most severe consequence, as vehicle exhaust contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, smog, and climate change. Furthermore, persistent traffic congestion in major cities degrades quality of life by lengthening travel times and increasing stress levels for commuters. From a public health perspective, a car-centric lifestyle encourages a sedentary routine, which directly correlates with rising rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and other health issues stemming from a lack of daily physical exertion.
In conclusion, while private cars offer unquestionable personal convenience, reliance on them reshapes lifestyles around urban sprawl, isolation, and sedentary habits. Because the resulting environmental damage, health risks, and severe urban congestion clearly outweigh individual benefits, the total effect of automobile reliance on human life is distinctly negative.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the task fully, presenting a clear and well-developed position from the introduction through to the conclusion. The writer successfully explores how reliance on private cars affects the way we live, considering urban design, daily routines, and social interactions. Furthermore, the prompt's second question regarding whether these effects tend to be positive or negative is answered decisively and supported well. Ideas are extended with relevant explanations, such as how suburban sprawl separates residential neighborhoods from commercial hubs, and how sedentary routines correlate with public health issues. While there is a slight tendency to over-generalise regarding societal impacts, the arguments remain cohesive and thoroughly explored, characteristic of a strong performance in this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction of the debate to specific lifestyle impacts, then weighing the societal consequences before a decisive summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Finally', and 'Furthermore' are used flexibly to guide the reader through the argumentation without appearing mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the text remains clear, ensuring that ideas flow naturally from one sentence to the next. The overall structure supports the development of the arguments seamlessly.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The writer employs a wide, fluent, and flexible lexical range suitable for discussing complex sociological and environmental topics. Less common lexical items and collocations are used skilfully, including expressions like 'unprecedented personal flexibility', 'suburban sprawl', 'solitary bubbles', and 'environmental degradation'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, reflecting a high level of stylistic awareness. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, which do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, demonstrating a strong command of vocabulary that elevates the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5
The essay showcases a wide range of complex grammatical structures executed with exceptional accuracy. The vast majority of sentences are error-free, featuring sophisticated syntactic elements such as participial phrases ('leading to consequences that are overall far more negative than positive') and subordinate clauses embedded naturally within complex sentences. Control of verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, plurals, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns is virtually flawless. Punctuation is handled expertly to guide the reader through intricate arguments, showing full flexibility across a diverse range of sentence forms.
