Student answer (Band 6.0)

In majority of the countries, people prefer their own vehicles as a mode of conveyance. Although this trend allow people to save their time and make them independent, I believe it has negative impact. Both veiws will be discussed below.

By relying on their own car, the living style of people change in a significant way. To explain it, public transportation is expensive and time-consuming. Since it charges people who use the service and takes specific or long routes with fixed stops. As well as some areas do not have access to the public transportation. For example, the person who works in remote areas or city, he will prefer his own vehicle because it will be more convenient and time saving. Moreover, having own vehicle will help individual to become independent and travel to any part of the city without thinking about the time and cost.

Despite of various advantages, this trend has negative impact. Because of the increasing number of private cars, the gases which are emitted by the vehicles are significantly increasing in the atmosphere which contributes to the air pollution. For instance, the percentage of carbon dioxide is escalating that causes a lot of health problems such as asthma, cancer, and many more. Furthermore, public transportation is the source of income for government. If public rely on their vehicles, the government would not get enough money and they can not work on the infrastructure. As a consequence, the development of the country will stop.

In conclusion, relying on their own car, help people to make their life easier and save time. However, the negative impacts like increase in the air pollution in the environment and not generating enough funds for the development of the country can not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing how reliance on private cars affects our lives and expressing a clear position that the effects are predominantly negative. The ideas are generally relevant, fulfilling the requirements for the mid-band level. For instance, the discussion on how cars provide independence and save time is presented alongside negative consequences such as air pollution and reduced government funds for infrastructure. However, some ideas remain under-developed or lack full extension. For example, the point about public transportation being a source of income for the government and how its absence halts national development is asserted rather than fully supported with robust reasoning or examples. To reach a higher level, all main points need to be thoroughly extended and supported with deep, convincing explanations throughout the entire essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and presents a clear overarching progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea grouped logically into its own section. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'Although this trend allow people', 'To explain it', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, and referencing is not always clear. For instance, 'the person who works in remote areas or city, he will prefer his own vehicle' displays awkward referencing and phrasing that disrupts the natural flow of ideas. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to employ cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs are smoother and more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing the writer to communicate ideas about transportation, pollution, and convenience clearly. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'conveyance', 'emitted', 'escalating', and 'infrastructure'. However, noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form occur throughout the text. Examples include 'In majority of the countries' (missing an article), 'this trend allow' (subject-verb agreement error related to lexical control of grammar patterns), and 'Both veiws' (spelling error). Additionally, phrases like 'living style' could be more naturally expressed as 'lifestyle'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from attaining a higher band. Incorporating more precise word choices and avoiding spelling slips would strengthen this aspect.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination through structures like 'Although this trend...' and 'Because of the increasing number...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Noticeable structural weaknesses include sentence fragments or dependent clauses punctuated as complete sentences, such as 'Since it charges people who use the service and takes specific or long routes with fixed stops.' and 'As well as some areas do not have access to the public transportation.' Furthermore, prepositional and article errors appear in sentences like 'in atmosphere' or 'rely on their car'. To move to a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation and clause structures.
