Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the effects of private cars on daily life and whether these effects are positive or negative, but the treatment remains partially developed. While the writer covers both benefits and drawbacks, ideas are sometimes repetitive or lack full elaboration. For instance, the discussion on benefits mentions saving time and emergency use, but phrases like 'gives ease people globally' are vague and general. Similarly, the conclusion introduces a new idea regarding government policies and purchasing limits rather than effectively summarising the main points. The position is discernible throughout, but the limited development of supporting arguments keeps the task response at this level. To move higher, the writer needs to fully extend and support each point with specific, well-reasoned examples and ensure a clearer, more focused development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with benefits', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and logical progression are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the sentence 'This might have both pros and cons depending on private vehicle' is slightly disconnected, and some cohesive links feel repetitive. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'because you are depend on another's property' where the link to the preceding context is weak. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas from sentence to sentence is smoother and more transparent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to discuss the topic, but it is marred by noticeable word choice, spelling, and word form errors. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'ficilitate' instead of 'facilitate', 'bare' instead of 'bear', and 'expensis' instead of 'expenses'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'traffic congestion' and 'maintenance charges', but control is inconsistent, leading to awkward phrasing like 'reduce the cost of that' when referring to depreciation or resale value. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve lexical resource, the writer needs to focus on precise word choice, accurate word forms, correct spelling, and natural collocations rather than relying on basic or repetitive terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text contains a limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'having a private transport' instead of 'having private transport', 'Every asset require' instead of 'requires', and 'Government play crucial role' instead of 'plays a crucial role'. Additionally, punctuation and prepositional use need better control, such as 'impact on people's life in some factors'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally expend effort to decipher the meaning. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
